Indianapolis Center for Advanced Research (ICFAR) was founded in the early 1970s.  It was established cooperatively by Indiana University, Purdue University, the State of Indiana, and the city of Indianapolis.

The first group of ICFAR to be formed was the Fortune-Fry Ultrasound Research Lab.  Interscience Research Institute (IRI) was recruited from Champaign, Illinois, and set up shop in University Hospital on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis.  Other groups were added including the Fluid Dynamics Research Lab and ARAC, a NASA sponsored database research group.  During the early 1980's ICFAR employed about 100 people.  ICFAR downsized during the late 80's and early 90's and eventually ceased to exist around 1996.
